Natalie Herbick Career
After graduation, Herbick stayed on at CBS Pittsburgh to work full-time. Her first role was as a reporter for their sports station on the show Steelers Saturday Night.
Herbick then moved to Ohio, where she started working for WTOV9, a local TV station based in the small towns of Steubenville and Wheeling. There, she not only anchored three evening newscasts, but reported live on-site and produced some of the station’s news segments.
During her work as a reporter, she usually handled political, criminal, and lifestyle pieces local to the station. In 2012, however, Herbick covered a case that made national news. In August of that year, a young girl who went to Steubenville High School was raped and repeatedly sexually assaulted by fellow classmates, many of which proudly posted the incident to their social media platforms. The crime happened at a party, where the intoxicated girl was taken advantage of and violated.
The story made headlines across the country as several news outlets weighed in on rape culture in schools, as well as the possible dangers associated with social media. Two boys only spent 1 and 2 years in jail, respectively, and were not added to the sex-offender registry. Several coaches and school officials that tried to cover up the crime were charged as well, and the judge faced backlash for what people believed was his light sentencing.
