Sunset magazine expects to tap a new editor-in-chief this week, but one of his first tasks may be clearing up some accounting issues at the magazine. Matt Bean, former editor-in-chief of Men’s Health and earlier and Entertainment Weekly, is expected to replace Irene Edwards, who exited several weeks ago.

The magazine was sold for an estimated $20 million in late 2017 in the waning days of the Time Inc. empire to Beverly Hills-based private equity firm Regent, which owns Army Times, Civil War Times and Wild West Magazine, among others. One source said that the magazine has not been paying freelancers and other vendors in months.

Bean was recruited initially by Time Inc. from Rodale to be the top editor of before moving on to edit Entertainment Weekly and was eventually tapped to run The Foundry, a digital media operation, which Time Inc. had built in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

But by then, Time had been acquired for $2.8 billion by Meredith, which decided to shut down the operation as a stand-alone and move it into downtown Manhattan with the other Time Inc. and Meredith operations. Bean had by that time landed back at Rodale as editor-in-chief of Men’s Health but excited that operation with its takeover by Hearst in January.

Sunset was started in 1898 by the Southern Pacific railroad company as a way to entice travelers to the Golden West. Its offices were burned to the ground in the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. The Lane family took over Sunset in the Great Depression and sold it and its campus-like setting in Menlo Park, Calif., to Time Inc. for $225 million in 1990. Time sold the real estate and moved the title to Oakland in 2017. Michael Reinstein, who runs Regent, said that “everyone that is part of the old guard will be paid very quickly.”
