Lynn Sherr Biography

Lynn Sherr is an American broadcast journalist and author, best known as a correspondent for the ABC newsmagazine 20/20. She received the George Foster Peabody Award for her work on the 20/20 anorexia documentary Hunger Inside in 1994.

Award-winning broadcaster and best-selling author Sherr spent more than thirty years at ABC News, including more than twenty as a correspondent with the ABC Newsmagazine 20/20.

Prior to her ABC assignment at 20/20, Sherr was a national correspondent for ABC News, where she was also part of the network’s political team for every election cycle through 2000.

Sherr also reported on the NASA space shuttle program from its inception in 1981 through the Challenger explosion in 1986, anchoring almost every mission from launch to landing. She is a graduate of Wellesley College, where she served as a trustee.

Before going to ABC in 1977, Sherr was a reporter for WNET-TV in New York and WETA-TV in Washington, D.C., both public television stations. Prior to that, she reported for WCBS-TV in New York, and The Associated Press in New York and Condé Nast Publications.

Sherr is a feminist. She has twice (in 1989 and 1992) been the recipient of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s (PPFA) Margaret Sanger Award (known as the “Maggie”), which is awarded to journalists for “exceptional coverage of reproductive rights and health care issues” in the view of PPFA She also hosted PPFA’s Maggie Awards luncheon in 2010.

Sherr has rejected calls for “new feminism”, remarking, “What’s wrong with the old feminism?” She has criticized Sarah Palin for calling herself a feminist, demanding, “What, exactly, has she done legislatively for other women? What paths has she forged?”Sherr was featured in the Jewish Women’s Archive web feature, Jewish Women and the Feminist Revolution.
