Mayor Muriel Bowser Bio

Muriel Bowser is an American Democratic politician currently the 8th Mayor of the District of Columbia since 2015. She became the second female Mayor of the District of Columbia after Sharon Pratt, who was the first woman to be reelected to that position.

Elected to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in 2004, Bowser was also elected to the Council in a special election in 2007, to succeed Adrian Fenty, who became also a Mayor. She was re-elected to the position in 2008 and 2012 and ran for mayor office in the 2014 election. She emerged the winner beating incumbent mayor Vincent C. Gray in the Democratic primary and later won the general election against three Independent and two minor-party candidates with 55% of the total votes cast. In 2018, she won a second term with an incredible 76% of the vote.

Her administration is focused on making DC’s prosperity more inclusive, advancing DC values, and building safer, stronger, and healthier neighborhoods across DC’s eight wards.

Washington, DC is unique in the American political system – the mayor, DC’s chief executive, functions as a governor, county executive, and mayor. Like governors, Mayor Bowser runs Medicaid, issues driver’s licenses, and has tax authority. Like county executives, Mayor Bowser runs the local jail, and, unlike most mayors, also oversees the public school system. In 2020, Washington, DC is home to 705,000 people across 68 square miles, has a AAA bond rating, and an annual budget of more than $15 billion.

Personal Life

Bowser began her political career in 2004, running unopposed for the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC). She represented district 4B09, which includes the neighborhood of Riggs Park. She became unopposed once more in 2006 whilst she ran for re-election. She individually helps the outfitting of the Metropolitan Police Department with frame cameras and has requested $6 million in her 2016 price range proposal to finish the task. Her proposal includes a provision that could make all footage from the cameras exempt from Freedom of Information Act requests, with the goal “to respect privacy”

Bowser grew up in North Michigan Park in northeast D.C. In 1990, Bowser graduated from Elizabeth Seton High School, a private all-women Catholic excessive school placed in Bladensburg, Maryland. She obtained a university scholarship due to her above common grades. Bowser graduated from Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a bachelor’s degree in history, and she or he graduated from the American University School of Public Affairs with a Masters in Public Policy.

She became a mom after adopting a newborn. Democrat Muriel announced the adoption in a statement Monday. Her office did not disclose the baby’s sex, name, age or photograph. She decided to start the adoption because it was a “great time” in her life and she had “so much to share with a baby.” She said notification that the baby was available came “much sooner” than she expected.
